This Directory of Archival and Manuscript Repositories in the Northwest is a compilation of information about heritage institutions in the five-state Northwest region, comprising Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Its purpose is to provide the researcher with information about the content of primary sources in these institutions. This information includes subjects covered by the primary sources and the volume of these holdings.
The Directory also provides information about the repository itself, including location, contact information, and range of public services offered. Listed are hours of operation; duplication services provided, such as photocopying, scans, photograph reproductions, and microfilming; availability of research services provided by on-site staff; and other pertinent information. The Directory includes information on federal, state, county, and city agencies, museums, religious archives, historical societies, tribal archives, genealogical societies, and corporate archives.
An attempt was made, over the course of several years, to be as inclusive as possible, with the hope that the Directory would be an exhaustive listing of repositories in the Northwest. Repositories were invited by email and letter to participate in a survey (using SurveyMonkey), and responses were entered into a database. The Directory currently includes just over 200 repositories, but it is growing every day and will be maintained and updated as frequently as needed.
